Christianity and Culture

This collection of articles explores the often contested relationship between Christian faith and American popular culture. "Popular culture" is used here to define the various daily activities of those within the United States who surf the Internet, read fictional novels, watch television, listen to the radio, or participate in sports. At times, these cultural practices and the products involved seem to overlap or merge into various expressions of Christian faith. When Christian experience and popular culture blend into overlapping perspectives and practices, the result can be both interesting and informative. Consequently, we see persons in search of God on the Internet, reading best-selling books about the Second Coming of Christ, or watching the crucifixion of Jesus over and over again on film.

This series attempts to make sense of the relationship between Christianity and American popular culture by investigating the various ways in which Christians in the United States allow these cultural practices to shape and reshape their faith. By reading Christian comic books, playing Christian video games, or purchasing a Jesus "bobble head" doll, Christians work out their own faith in front of each other and often reveal in the process their own religious journey and the motivations behind their practices of faith.
